Merriam

Tripling the tasting gardens of a hidden gem made space for word-of-mouth to grow in person.
Story +

The Merriam family wanted to welcome their mostly-online following to greater space within the vineyard so more could enjoy the land their process reveres. The parking lot was moved below, opening the area between where wine is made and poured for outdoor sampling. European hornbeams line the gravel drive toward the plaza, where we replaced the old lime-hardened soil to nourish an orchard of grasses, laurels and olives. Gridded shrubs beneath a canopy of trees shape the square into closer conversations, as water spills over stone to hush and hide the highway. Working in the wet winters between harvests, we redirected rain and raised retaining walls to reclaim the sodden grounds for planting. From excavators and engineers to masons and arborists, we gathered our people to help more people gather, bettering budget and schedule despite the unforeseen.
