House in the Woods
Transparent walls frame the forest, vanishing the small garden-fronted house into the quiet embrace of nature. Challenges arose as we built; an old wooden bridge was rebuilt to bear truckloads of earth and concrete, unsettling the schedule and budget, and we chased windows through Europe for months. But no trace of effort displays in the finished place, as Douglas fir slips from floor to ceiling, grains matched and seamless. The interior invites the wilderness, earthen colors suggesting silky peels of madrone bark whispered around tables sculpted whole from a towering walnut. As abiding as the journey that sought it, serenity pervades in this ethereal lookout held by the hill.
